Transitions

A trail in Port Moody.

As the days shorten, the leaves start changing colour and kids head back to school, there is a feeling of Autumn in the air. We may technically still call it Summer (I'm all for a bit more of that), yet there are the sure signs of a new season on the horizon. Change is in the air and it feels enticing while perhaps having us wishing for things to stay the same or hoping to settle into the new sooner than later. During transitions, it can feel chaotic and we can become ungrounded if we don't have some kind of support. Have you found the way your practice supports you through change?

Making time in your schedule for a full class, is highly recommended as the hour (or more) to yourself and most of the poses can be grounding if you pay attention to and receive support from your connection to the floor... among other presence practices that may be offered.

On your own, a very simple way to feel more grounded during transitions is Mountain Pose anywhere and everywhere you find yourself. Stand, with evenly distributed weight across both feet, and feel your connection to what you're standing on. Imagine and sense the connection between you and the Earth through anything your feet are in contact with. As you press down into that connection, feel the corresponding lift up through the top of your head. If you can be directly connected to Earth, all the better. You can also imagine growing a root or roots deep down into the Earth to feel more supported.

A basic cross-legged seat is also a good option with your pelvis heavy on the floor, a block or a cushion. Similar to Mountain Pose, feel your connection through what you're sitting on, to the Earth and press down to feel a lifted quality. Make sure to use more height under hips and/or some under your knees if the knees are higher than hips or not resting down.

Take some time in Nature. walk a trail, watch the sunset, listen to the sounds of birds... anything that brings you presence and peace. Feel your connection to the place that you are in, in the moment. Even if it's your hands on the steering wheel, your butt in a chair, your clothing... presence is never far away when you notice.

Of course, Savasana and Yoga Nidra can also work some magic and help you sleep better.

Let me know what works for you,
